New from Pastor Lanier

Recently the result of Dr. Lanier’s doctoral work in England was published by Bloomsbury/T&T Clark, entitled: Old Testament Conceptual Metaphors and the Christology of Luke’s Gospel.

That’s a mouthful! What is this book about? It explores how the Gospel according to Luke draws on ancient metaphors for God in the OT and, in a sense, re-applies them in a fresh way to convey the identity of Jesus. The four metaphors are:

  • The “horn of salvation”
  • The “dawn from on high”
  • The “mother bird gathering her children”
  • The “crushing stone”

Dr. Lanier argues that this pattern of reconfiguring metaphors for God is a subtle but important way in which the evangelist communicates that Jesus Christ is fully God. In other words, through this (and other) means, Luke gives what is typically called a “Christology of divine identity.”
