Summer sermon series

Every month at River Oaks, we celebrate the Lord’s Supper (also known as “Communion”). Regularly we baptize new Christians on their profession of faith as well as the children of believing parents. But why do we do these things? What are “sacraments,” and why do we do them the way we do?

The Westminster Shorter Catechism (Question 92) defines a sacrament as follows: “A sacrament is an holy ordinance instituted by Christ; wherein, by sensible signs, Christ, and the benefits of the new covenant, are represented, sealed, and applied to believers.

We believe, along with all Protestant churches, that Jesus Christ instituted only two sacraments for the life and practice of the church: baptism (Matt 28:19-20) and the Lord’s Supper (1 Cor 11:23-26). We also believe these sacraments are rooted in the Old Testament and function as signs/seals of the covenant of grace between God and his people.

Join us in Summer 2024 for this series looking at the biblical foundations and meaning of the two sacraments.
