A Study of Gentle & Lowly

Coming out of the Advent/Christmas season, our hearts are freshly aware of the humanity of Jesus: God enfleshed in a baby born in Bethlehem. But even then, so often it is easy to see Jesus Christ as distant from us. Does he really love people who are broken, impatient, weary, and sinful like us?

The answer in Scripture is a resounding yes! As fully God yet fully man, Jesus has a heart of humility towards the wayward sinners he comes to save. During adult Sunday school for January-April 2022, we will be reflecting on this great truth as we draw near to the God-man who draws near to us.

To do this, we will use Dane Ortlund’s Gentle and Lowly: The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers (Crossway, 2020). Without question it has been the runaway bestseller within evangelical Christianity in the past year or so, having sold well over half a million copies and finding itself at the top of many lists of must-read books. River Oaks has procured over 100 free copies of the book available free of charge to anyone who participates in the upcoming Sunday school.

How the Class Will Work

The class will be team-taught by Pastor Camera, Joel Trigger, and our pastoral interns (Luther Tate, David Knowles, Austin Slater, and Steven Seal). Each Sunday session will consist of a guided Q&A/discussion through one or two chapters.

This means that, in order to get the most out of the study, you need to read the chapter(s) slated for a given Sunday before coming to class. (Though it’s okay if you don’t–still come anyway!)

The schedule will be as follows:

  • 1/16, Chapter 1
  • 1/23, Chapters 2-3
  • 1/30, Chapters 4-5
  • 2/6, Chapter 6-7
  • 2/13, Chapter 8-9
  • 2/20, Chapter 10
  • 2/27, Chapters 11-12
  • 3/6, Chapter 13
  • 3/13, Chapters 14-15
  • 3/20, Chapters 16-17
  • 3/27, Chapters 18-19
  • 4/3, Chapters 20-21
  • 4/10, Chapters 22-23

(Note: Due to the discussion-oriented nature of the class, we will not be doing audio recordings)
