Think you know the Christmas story?
The nativity plotline from your childhood seems pretty obvious. Mary rushes into Bethlehem on a donkey, accompanied by her fiance Joseph. She’s about to deliver her baby, but the city is packed with visitors. Innkeeper after innkeeper turn them away holding “No vacancy” signs. They are offered a stable out in the fields, surrounded by barn animals. Baby Jesus is born, and an angel appears above the stable, beckoning the shepherds. Suddenly a star shines brightly in the sky and hovers above the stable, and three wise men appear–kings from the Orient bearing gifts. And a lowly drummer boy follows them, tapping “Pa rumpa pum pum.”
There’s only one problem: much of this is not actually in the Bible!
