“The Lord roars from Zion…”

If you are familiar with the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis, you will know that God is pictured in the story as a great lion named Aslan. When Lucy, one of the 4 children in the book, learns that Aslan is a lion, she is frightened and asks Mr. Beaver, “Is he safe?” “Safe?” said Mr. Beaver. “Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.”

The prophet Amos reminds us that the Lord is a lion, the great King who rules over the nations in righteousness. God’s people in the time of Amos presumed they were safe from the Lion’s judgment because He had chosen them. Amos argues that election means God’s people are “more” responsible for how they live, not “less.”

Amos however, does not leave us without hope. Following the roaring of the great Lion, restoration is promised that will renew the entire world.
