Important Livestream Update

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, River Oaks (like many churches) did not offer a livestream or video recording of our worship service–only an mp3 of the sermon. We have done our best to accommodate the contingent circumstances of the pandemic by offering a livestream, but it has never been a long-term strategic priority for the church due to the high value we place on embodied corporate worship. In recent months the viewership of the livestream has, unsurprisingly, declined as most members and attenders are back to worshiping in-person now. (We now only average about a dozen concurrent views.)

The leaders of the church aim to pursue the wisest path forward for our livestream. On the one hand, we want to avoid the temptation of treating YouTube as a crutch for corporate worship. Throughout church history “worshiping from home” (in pajamas) has never been viewed as a viable substitute for the gathered communion of the saints. On the other hand, we recognize the value the livestream offers for the relatively small number of shut-ins we have in our midst.

With this in mind, the leadership of the church has determined that, for now, we will continue to offer a livestream of our 11am service (available here), but the video playback will only be available on Sunday. Beginning on September 18, the recorded service video will no longer be archived for midweek (or later) viewing. However, the mp3 of the sermon will continue to be made available for listening any time via SoundCloud (or via the website).
